Shout Outs – August 2018
Shout Out: Jashine Richard
One of our former YouthForce Interns, Jashine Richard, returned this summer as part of our staff. As an intern, she excelled during training and landed an internship at Audubon Nature Institute. This summer, she utilized the skills she developed in her internship to develop and implement curriculum as well as serving as a role model for students. She’s starting college this fall at at Nicholls State University.
Shout Out: Seletra Sylve
Another YouthForce Intern alum, Seletra Sylve, returned this summer to share her experience interning with Touro Infirmary Hospital, where she was exposed to a wide variety of jobs in the Health Sciences career pathway. She told them how the real work experience reassured her interest in medicine. After graduating in the top 5% of her class at Edna Karr High School, Seletra went on to enroll at Millsaps College. She is a pre-med student, majoring in Biology and working towards minors in French and Business Administration.
Shout Out: Judy Reese Morse
The Urban League of Louisiana, a YouthForce NOLA Steering Committee organization, has named Judy Reese Morse its new President and CEO. Morse’s initial focus in the role will include expanding the League’s programming and advocacy across Louisiana, making the case for equity and economic self reliance for those served by the Urban League and increasing the level of engagement with Louisiana residents. We welcome her to the new position and look forward to working with her!
Shout Out: Dr. Monique Cola
Welcome and best wishes to Dr. Monique Cola, who was recently selected as principal of our partner school New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School. Dr. Cola has more than 20 years experience conducting scientific research and more than 10 years experience in education. She is a passionate advocate for Career Technical Education and STEM-focused educational pursuits. We look forward to working with her to prepare Sci High Students for #RealLifeSuccess.
Shout Out: Mervin Jackson
Congratulations to the newly-elected principal of our partner school Warren Easton Charter High School, Mervin Jackson. A seasoned educator, Mr. Jackson served as the school’s assistant principal for six years and has worked there since 1999. He’s held many roles over the years, including coach, teacher, and disciplinarian. We wish him the best on his first school year as principal!
